For the younger ones of you out there, you might be wondering what on earth the title of this post is about? All will become clear I promise.
This morning, having finally got into bed at 0400 UK time, we rose at 0500 Texas time to grab an early breakfast and start to our first destination on this road trip, San Antonio. If you read the first post, you will realise that this place didn't hold great memories for us but after a glorious day under beautiful blue skies, most of those memories have been assuaged.
Things mind you didn't get off to a great start as our confidence in leaving Houston via the number 8 Beltway and then Interstate 10 without the assistance of our Tom Tom 920 proved totally unfounded.
Within probably a couple of miles we were clearly lost and heading who knows where in five lanes of fast moving traffic! Once upon a time I would have dealt with this slightly stressful situation with a cheery smile and an encouraging word for my navigator. Not today however and through this blog, I would like to make a full and a very humble public apology to the love of my life for a somewhat tetchy response to our predicament. As it happened, we did go a completely different route to the one expected but the mileage was identical and just after 1030 hours we rolled into San Antonio.
This city is home to the most popular tourist destination in Texas - the Alamo - where in February and March 1836 Mexican General Sant Ana laid siege to this fort, eventually overwhelming it and killing every occupant that had tried to defend it for the cause of Texan independance. It was ironic that shortly after this event Sam Houston defeated the Mexicans and the Texans gained the independance they so desired.
But what of the title of this post? Well three of the most famous men in American history were killed at the Alamo, notably Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Travis and they were immortalised in the film of the same name with none other than John Wayne playing the lead role.
So that's the history lesson for today but if you have a spare couple of hours, log into You Tube and watch this epic.
Lots of other things to tell you about San Antonio but I'll do that tomorrow.
